2006 Fall Classes
-Study the mysteries of bamboo, enjoy unique cooking instruction with an “Opera Singing Chef” and learn how to draw and paint with an amazing artist-

Quail Botanical Gardens has the largest collection of Bamboo in the Northern Hemisphere. Enjoy the teachings of three bamboo experts covering more than 100 plants. Learn about bamboo’s origin, growth habit, specific characteristics and specialized care, as well as planting and economical use. The class includes three classroom sessions and one field session on a Saturday.Upon attending all sessions, students will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment from Quail Botanical Gardens.

Chef Elizabeth Podsiadlo has been a personal chef and cooking instructor in San Diego for twelve years. Her love for preparing good food runs a close second to her love of music, and she performs regularly as a vocal artist in many of San Diego’s downtown hotels and restaurants. Chef Elizabeth’s enthusiasm and unique persona have led her to be called the “Opera Singing Chef,” and she has appeared on local television stations, including KFMB and KUSI.
Onions and Ogres - Explore the beauty and flavor of the onions we know and love - after all, it’s about what’s on the inside! Recipes being taught include: Mini onion kugels, a great flavor and texture and a meal all by itself and perfect for those on the go. Caramelized garlic-onion bisque - an unforgettable full-flavored creamy bisque that will go very well with the other delicious recipe being taught, onion focaccia. Don’t forget to bring your breath mints! Recipes and tastings are included in the class fee.
Saturday, October 28th, 10am – 12:30pm
Fee: $30 for Members, $35 for Non Members.
ROULADES 101 - Delicious and satisfying, this class will teach two stellar meat roll recipes. One recipe includes a traditional German beef roulade with hints on how to make it full-flavored, tender and moist. Also on the menu is a tender chicken breast roulade stuffed with apricots, rosemary and a delicious stuffing, which will then be browned, baked and served with a creamy pepper gravy, flavored with white wine. Also being taught; basmati rice with apricots and rosemary for the chicken roulade and seasoned green beans for the beef roulade. Both recipes are great for a dinner party.
Samples of both roulades with sides will be offered during the class.
Recipes and tastings included in the class fee.

Quail Botanical Gardens is pleased to offer the following art classes by Linda Luisi. A graduate of Tufts University (BFA) and the school of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Luisi has been trompe l’oeil muralist for 20 years. She shares her ‘New and Old Master Techniques’ with fun and enthusiasm for all levels. Beginners are welcome. Luisi will guide you with realism or help you create an expressive style of your own. “Botanicals with a Flair” Draw/Paint
Learn realistic and easy ways to draw botanicals and fruit, patterns in nature and decorative designs.
Tuesday, October 31st, 10am – 12pm

“Depth and Dimension” Draw/Paint
Sharpen right brain observation skills and relax and learn to draw with confidence. Tips for making drawings “come to life ” with flowers and still life.

“En Plein Air” Draw/Paint
Have fun with landscape perspective, depth and color harmony with flowers, water lilies. Collage / Mixed Media
Offered two different days - Tuesday, November 7th and Tuesday, Dec. 5th, 10am – 2pm
$45 Members and $50 Non Members per day
Admission is free for members and $10 for non-members. Seniors, students and active military are $7. Children under 12 are $5. Docent-led guided tours Saturdays at 10am. Meet at the Visitor Center to learn about Quail’s plants from around the world.
