San Diego, CA, November 18, 2003 — Quail Botanical Gardens (QBG) announced today that it had
been awarded a grant in the amount of $136,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services
(IMLS) (http://www.imls.gov), for a two-year project in partnership with the Children's Discovery
Museum (CDM) of North San Diego County.
"We are so pleased to have a grant of this significance awarded to us. Both in dollar amount and in
scope, it represents a major augmentation of programs and capacity for our organizations," stated Dr.
Diane Baxter, Director of Development at Quail. " The CDM will focus their programs on the arts
and everyday life in different world cultures, while QBG explores the connections between nature
and the culture of each region," added Baxter.
The grant will enable QBG to partner with the CDM for Inside/Outside World Cultures, a
collaboration that will directly support the missions and strategic plans of both institutions. The
project will create exhibits and family programs at each site, exploring world cultures through each
organization's unique perspective. The first year will feature Pacific Rim cultures, and year two will
highlight Central America.
In addition to the child-focused exhibits, the partners will work together to develop and implement
Saturday Family Programs, K-6 school outreach, and online activities that support the other project
elements, expanding the reach of the exhibits and broadly reaching families and children. "We are
excited to be collaborating with Quail Gardens on this wonderful program," commented Catherine
Boyle, Children's Discovery Museum Director.'"As the first part of the program we plan to create
The Japanese Home Life Exhibit, an authentic, immersive environment for children to learn about
the many aspects of Japanese life," added Boyle.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is an independent Federal grant-making agency
dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners. The Institute fosters leadership, innovation,
and a lifetime of learning by supporting the nation's 15,000 museums and 122,000 libraries. The
Institute also encourages partnerships to expand the educational benefit of libraries and museums.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services takes an active role in championing the role libraries
and museums play in our society. IMLS does this in a variety of programs that support research and
encourage innovation.
